Challenge
Want a challenge and a change of pace? Go shoot a small town high school football game. The light is, to put it mildly, very bad.
I’d like to see Joe McNally tackle this lighting challenge with his mighty-mite Speedlites. Well, he could, but he’d do it with 4 assistants and about two grand of sb-800s and [...]
But she shot famous people
I hate to sum up Annie Leibovitz’ career with five words, but that’s what kept coming to mind as I thumbed through her massive $75 retrospective (available at your local bookstores now!).Why? I think that’s a complicated answer.
Beyond the personal photos, many including her time with Susan Sontag, most of her work deals with celebrities. [...]
Back in the saddle again…
After an inadvertent layoff from shooting models for a few months, I was back at it again this weekend. Worked with a wonderful young model named Svetlana Saturday.
We worked the streets of downtown Mobile, so I kept the usual array of studio equipment in the truck. Just an off-camera hotshoe and a reflector. The clouds [...]
Peaceful
There’s nothing quite so peaceful as being near the water at dawn. Most of humanity around you is still slumbering. Only the fishermen, seagulls and brown pelicans are out.And the darkness slowly receeds, giving way to the golden tones of the sun’s approach beyond the horizon.Makes me wish I was a morning person.
While shooting Sunday, I [...]
Wild wierd stuff
This post was originally going to be titled: Oh, Google, why hast thou forsaken me?
Occassionally, I like to check where I stand on the search engines, when the other day, lo and behold, my main site was nowhere to be found on Google’s search results. Wow, I had no idea how I went from [...]
Working through it
My keeper rate is still lower than I like. Just have to keep working through it. Don’t know if I like this one or not.Spent the afternoon shooting in Thomaston, Ala. Sunday afternoon. The town is home to the Alabama Rural Heritage Center, designed by Auburn University students in the famed Rural Studio project. It’s an interesting [...]
Gotta getaway
Vacation is drawing to a close and now I face the work week again like the mere mortal I am. Although it was enjoyable, New Orleans really isn’t the same after Katrina. And what was predicted to be a cool week turned into a sweltering 4 days of near 90-degree temps and oppressive humidity.
Photographically, the [...]
Po-Boy nirvana
Life can often bring unexpected pleasures, like finding one of the best shrimp po-boys I’ve ever had at the “Cajun Kitchen” restaurant, run by an Asian family in Hattiesburg, Miss. If you’re ever in the hub city, I suggest you try them out.
The color of age
Here’s a recent shot from the fort series. Different chemicals leaching out of the soil and construction materials during rains over the years produced this lovely patina pattern on one of the arch supports.
On a related note, I reached conclusion with Dingler’s abstract. It’s unfortunate I won’t have it mounted in time to deliver it [...]
